For psoriasis patients, smoking has negative effects, including more frequent nail psoriasis, cardiovascular disease, and an increase in the extent and severity of psoriasis.
A Turkish study behind this discovery
Psoriasis is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease of the skin in which genetic and environmental factors play a crucial role [1]. Smoking is one of the environmental factors that can trigger psoriasis, according to a study published online October 14, 2020, in the International Journal of Clinical Practice. Two Turkish doctors, both from Ankara City Hospital in Turkey, examined the smoking habits of 133 psoriasis patients at Ankara Education and Research Hospital between May 2018 and May 2019 [2]. They thus evaluated the impact of smoking on the characteristics of the disease.
Smoking linked to increased psoriasis severity
The researchers found that among psoriasis patients, 67.6% were smokers [3]. Furthermore, compared with non-smoking patients with psoriasis, smokers more frequently presented with moderate to severe psoriasis, nail psoriasis, systemic treatment or additional cardiovascular disease. A correlation was thus highlighted between smoking and the extent and severity index of psoriasis.
Encouraging psoriasis patients to quit smoking and supporting them in their efforts to stop smoking can therefore help reduce the negative impact of smoking on psoriasis [4].
