Thinner packaging, cigarettes considered elegant: "light" or light cigarettes have established themselves in the tobacco market in just a few decades. Elongated and white along their entire length, light cigarettes have succeeded in seducing the female population by sending an image that smoking remains "classy". While these suggest a lower health hazard than basic cigarettes, they are just as toxic for the body. Tobacco manufacturers claim that so-called "light" cigarettes contain less tar and nicotine. However, the composition of the smoke from so-called "light" cigarettes remains identical to that of traditional cigarettes. The "light" designation claimed by manufacturers is only linked to the presence of micropores in the filter. These small holes in the filter are supposed to dilute the amount of tar and nicotine inhaled. Thinking they are smoking cigarettes with less nicotine, smokers smoke more and therefore inhale more smoke. They even tend to inhale more often or more deeply to find the quantities of nicotine specific to their addiction. In addition, they consume more cigarettes daily and are therefore exposed to the same quantity of toxic substances as smokers of conventional cigarettes. The term light is misleading. Current regulations prohibit tobacco manufacturers from indicating on cigarette packets the words "light" and "low tar".
