Le tabagisme est une épidémie industrielle

The notion of an industrial epidemic was coined by the economist Béatrice Majnoni d'Intignano with special reference to tobacco. She defines an industrial epidemic by the fact that "Diseases and mortality are the direct result of the consumption of risky industrial products, consumption linked to lifestyles maintained by an industry[1]".

In fact, while tobacco has existed for several centuries, the tobacco epidemic developed with the emergence of an extremely powerful industry at the end of the 19th century. The latter widely distributed its products through mass production, the invention of marketing and public relations strategies. Female smoking is a direct result of this, as is the rapid development of tobacco consumption in many countries that had previously been protected.

Former WHO Director-General for Health, Dr Gro Harlem Bruntland, who initiated the negotiation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control treaty, summed up the situation as follows: : “Tobacco use is unlike other threats to global health. Infectious diseases do not employ multinational public relations firms. There are no front groups promoting the spread of cholera. Mosquitoes do not have lobbyists at their service. [2]. » And to add "Smoking is a contagious disease whose mainstay is advertising."

From this perspective, not all countries are at the same stage of development of the epidemic.

The tobacco industry sees its business as a war to be waged, in which the only thing that matters is the outcome that allows it to maintain and develop its profit margins. In this perspective, a determined application of all effective measures to reduce tobacco consumption appears essential to counter the development of this epidemic in many countries and to accelerate the decline in consumption in others.
