To determine the impact of the lockdown on prevention, best practices, and risky health behaviors, Odoxa and the FG2A conducted a survey of a representative sample of the French population over the age of 18. They noted, in particular, that tobacco consumption declined between the beginning and end of the lockdown: a result that gives hope for better living together from tomorrow.
The opinion of the French on the prevention of risks linked to certain behaviors
Seven specific behaviors were addressed with the 1,000 French people surveyed last March, including tobacco consumption. 84% of those surveyed expressed feeling well informed about the risks associated with this behavior. Across all behaviors, 78% felt their knowledge of the risks had improved. Finally, on the specific point of prevention, 58% felt poorly informed about the risks by the manufacturers who market these products. The action of public authorities was, for its part, largely deemed insufficient (61%).
A post-lockdown assessment that marks a decline in tobacco consumption... lastingly?
The first phase of the survey conducted on March 12 and 13 estimated tobacco consumption at 27% among respondents. On May 13 and 14, it was only 23%. A decline of 4 points can therefore be observed in tobacco consumption and can be explained by the social dimension of these behaviors that pose a health risk. The social environment stands out here as a significant dimension of smoking. While confinement has led to a reduction in bad habits, it has also made it possible for 1 in 5 French people to discover new, healthier activities, such as sports or meditation. In addition, 79% of those surveyed expressed their intention to be more attentive to prevention and to avoid behaviors that pose risks to their health, such as smoking. However, one small drawback is that the lockdown will also have put into perspective the French people's perception of the seriousness of risky behavior: the perception of smoking as "really serious" has fallen by 15 points.
