The vanilla flavor of electronic cigarettes could disrupt embryonic development

Researchers have called for better information for pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy about a risk associated with vanillin, an ingredient most often associated with vanilla flavoring and frequently used as a flavoring agent in e-liquids. The study, conducted at the University of California, Riverside, and published in the journal Human Reproduction, examined the effects of this substance on human embryonic stem cells in the laboratory.[1]. While they cannot definitively state that the same effects would be observed in women and their embryos, the researchers nevertheless warn that low concentrations of vanillin could reach the embryo in pregnant women and caution against vaping during pregnancy, especially if women are experiencing difficulties conceiving or miscarriages.

Effects observed on embryonic cells should be considered with caution.

The researchers exposed these cells to different concentrations of vanillin and observed that very low concentrations could alter the cells' ability to differentiate into different cell types, while higher concentrations led to cell death.

" We focused on vanillin because it is frequently used in e-cigarette liquids, is often used at high concentrations, and because we knew that embryonic cells possess a channel called TRPV4 on their surface that was likely to bind to vanillin. »" explained Professor Prue Talbot, of the University of California at Riverside, USA, who led the study.

Several specialists, however, pointed out that this was a preclinical study conducted in vitro. Professor Jacob George of the University of Dundee indicated that these results were concerning and warranted further clinical research, while also noting that an effect observed in cells in the laboratory does not necessarily translate into an effect in humans.

Professor Marian Knight of Oxford University also pointed out that the exposure conditions used in the study differ from those to which an embryo would be exposed during maternal vaping. She noted that some effects appeared only at concentrations unlikely to be reached in the fetus, although some effects were observed at levels that could be found in maternal blood.

A broader debate on the flavors of electronic cigarettes

These findings fuel ongoing concerns about the potential effects of vaping during pregnancy and underscore the need for more research on the chemicals in e-cigarette liquids. According to the researchers, women trying to conceive, as well as those already pregnant, should be informed of the risks, while regulatory bodies should consider requiring e-cigarette manufacturers to list all ingredients on their packaging.

This demand is based on a lack of understanding of their health effects and their strong appeal, combined with colorful packaging, to young people and non-smokers. In the United States, several local and state governments have already banned flavorings, and other communities are considering doing so.

Internationally, this approach is also progressing. In Canada, this ban is being studied in certain provinces and in the province of Quebec has already adopted it. In Europe, the Netherlands, Belgium or even Latvia And Slovenia have already banned flavourings in vaping products, and other countries have said they are considering it, such as the Czech Republic.

In France, public health experts such as the National Committee Against Smoking (CNCT) have been supporting such a measure for several years. and call on the European Union to generalize this ban, within the framework of the revision of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) which particularly concerns vaping products.
