“The decision to completely eliminate tobacco is an integral part of our goal to provide healthier products in our stores, to support customer well-being.”[1]These are the words of Eric Blom, spokesperson for Hannaford.

Hannaford Ends Tobacco Sales

Hannaford is a grocery chain that has been around since 1883 and is now located in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Massachusetts.[2], across 183 establishments. It is also the largest grocery chain in the state of Maine with 63 stores.

This Thursday, July 16, the company announced the end of sales of cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes and hookahs for fall 2020.

Tobacco control in the state of Maine, USA

In the state of Maine, the abandonment of tobacco sales is not a first: the Target and CVS Pharmacy chains had already taken this path in 1996 and 2014 respectively.[3]These are courageous decisions because this State, like many countries in the world, does not have the monopoly on tobacco distribution which allows France to limit accessibility to tobacco products.

The decision to end tobacco sales in their establishments is no accident. In Maine, 17% of adults are smokers, and what's more, the incidence of smoking-related cancers is higher than the national average.[4].

Last January, the state passed a new law designed to fund smoking cessation programs. Specifically, the law required taxes on tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, cigars, and hookah tobacco to be increased in line with the tax on cigarettes, increasing them from $20 to $431.[5].
