Taichung is set to become the first of six Taiwanese municipalities to ban residents under 18 from using or possessing e-cigarettes, starting in September 2020.<\/p>\n
Indeed, the sale and supply of electronic cigarettes or products associated with vaping (e-liquids, in particular) to minors and pregnant women may be punished by a fine of between 10,000 NT $ and 50,000 N $ (300 to 1,500 euros).<\/p>\n
The use of e-cigarettes in schools, museums, cinemas, or on public transport will also be banned, with violators facing fines ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 New Taiwan dollars, equivalent to 60 to 300 euros.<\/p>\n
The Taichung Department of Health emphasized that the number of adolescents and minors using e-cigarettes was steadily increasing, posing a major health challenge. Since they were not considered tobacco products, e-cigarettes were not covered by the Tobacco Risks and Prevention Act, and until then, they had benefited from a legal vacuum.<\/p>\n
This decision comes as major e-cigarette companies like Juul are being criticized for targeting younger generations, particularly via social media, and selling their products to minors. E-cigarettes should be considered exclusively as a potential smoking cessation tool. They should never represent a means of entry into the consumption of addictive products due to nicotine, or even act as a gateway to traditional tobacco products. In this regard, the public authorities reiterate their continued commitment to curbing the tobacco epidemic among younger generations.<\/p>\n
