Thinner packaging and cigarettes considered elegant: "light" cigarettes have become established on the tobacco market in just a few decades. Elongated and white throughout, light cigarettes have successfully appealed to women by projecting the image that smoking remains "classy." While these cigarettes suggest a lower health risk than standard cigarettes, they are just as toxic to the body.<\/p>\n
Tobacco manufacturers claim that so-called "light" cigarettes contain less tar and nicotine. However, the composition of the smoke from so-called "light" cigarettes remains identical to that of traditional cigarettes. The "light" designation claimed by manufacturers is solely related to the presence of micropores in the filter. These small holes in the filter are supposed to dilute the amount of tar and nicotine inhaled.
\nThinking they're smoking low-nicotine cigarettes, smokers smoke more and therefore inhale more smoke. They even tend to inhale more frequently or more deeply to achieve the nicotine levels required to maintain their addiction. Furthermore, they consume more cigarettes daily and are therefore exposed to the same amount of toxic substances as conventional cigarette smokers.<\/p>\n
The "light" label is misleading. Current regulations prohibit tobacco manufacturers from labeling cigarette packages with the words "light" and "low tar."<\/p>\n
